As
part of our advocacy efforts to address the healthcare workforce
shortage, and to assist hospital members with workforce
planning, CHA conducts periodic member surveys to assess
nursing and allied health profession vacancy rates at Connecticut's
not-for-profit acute care hospitals.
The
results of the most recent survey, in which 29 hospitals
participated, demonstrate improvement in vacancy rates for
some diagnostic imaging positions and a very slight increase
in vacancy rates for staff registered nurses.
While
hospital nursing and allied health vacancy rates remained
generally stable this year, and likely reflect the impact
of hospitals' ongoing recruitment and retention efforts,
Connecticut's healthcare workforce shortage projections
remain significant. As the population ages, baby boomers
retire, and the demand for healthcare services grows, a
continued focus on initiatives relating to healthcare workforce
development and retention is essential.
