The
Manager Skill Building Blended Learning Program ~ A Six-Month
Curriculum of Learning Events Combined with Online Mentoring,
Expert Consultation and Peer Interaction will be offered again
beginning in January 2007. This “blended learning”
program combines the benefits of technology, face-to-face
instruction, mentoring and developmental discussions with
supervisors to ensure sustained learning and behavioral change.
It also incorporates interaction between the participant and
his or her own manager and/or HR staff during the course of
the program.
How does it work? The Manager Skill Building Program offers an established curriculum of fourteen learning events designed to meet the developmental needs of newly-appointed managers or established mangers who have never had the benefit of formal training. It will also benefit individuals identified as having “management potential.” The six-month curriculum uses a variety of learning environments (classroom seminars and online computer-based training), making it both efficient and cost effective. Throughout the six months, program participants will receive online mentoring, will interact online and in person with other managers enrolled in the program, and will have access at all times to content experts for questions and discussion.
The curriculum consists of ten core programs (five instructor-led seminars plus five online courses) and a selection of elective programs. Two online and two instructor-led programs can be selected from the list of elective programs at no additional cost. Additional electives can be purchased individually for an extra fee.
How is learning progress activated and tracked? Participating managers and their supervisors will track progress and access online learning events via an Internet-Based Learning Dashboard. Participating managers will be able to use the dashboard to ask questions of experts, and to interact online with other managers enrolled in the program. By clicking on the “Ask My Supervisor” button, the manager can send an e-mail message to his/her supervisor and ask a question before he/she forgets it. Clicking on the “Ask a Human Resources Expert” button will direct a question to an HR professional within the hospital. The “Ask My Skill-Building Mentor” button will direct a question to a professional assigned to help participants throughout the six months. The “Discuss with My Peers” button will allow listserv question posting and discussions with other managers enrolled in the program. Discussions will be monitored by a CHA staff member and a consulting expert to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of the discussion.
The Manager Skill Building Program is designed to encourage developmental discussions between the participating manager and her/his supervisor. The first core course, “Leaping From Staff to Management: You’re a Manager Now What?” will be preceded by an orientation session that introduces the participating manager and her/his supervisor to the series and how to use the online features of the program. Participating managers will also be introduced to their skill-building mentor and to each other. Electives should be chosen during developmental discussions. However, when participating managers enroll in an elective, an e-mail message will be sent to their supervisor and the supervisor must approve the enrollment before the course can be taken. This will prevent the participant from incurring non-approved expenses. Supervisors of participating managers will be able to view the progress of their managers in completing the curriculum, and to generate reports. Upon successful completion of the program, a certificate will be awarded.
